The improvement of methodologies to establish the environmental sensitivity index (ESI) to oil spills in Amazonia is of paramount importance for the preservation of biodiversity in areas under the influence of the petroleum industry. This topic is the focus of the present paper, whose investigated site is located in the municipality of Coari (Amazonas State in Brazil), embracing part of the Urucu-Coari-Manaus pipeline and the Coari Terminal. Due to the evolutionary character of the landscape in Amazonia, a purely qualitative approach may not cover the corresponding levels of complexity. Thus, the fractal dimension is proposed as a complementary tool to the current methodology for the construction of ESI maps, which is based on a descriptive approach to fluvial geomorphology. Therefore, the following products were used to estimate the fractal dimension of the water-vegetation interface: RADARSAT-1 images and JERS-1 SAR classified mosaics at dry and wet seasons; SWBD mask; SRTM DEM at the flooding season. These products enabled the definition of fluvial segments along the Arauá, Urucu, Solimões and Coari rivers, as well as along the Coari Lake. The fractal dimension values allowed the quantitative characterization of different levels of geometric complexity for the water-vegetation interface, which were instrumental for the refinement of the ISA ranking in the surroundings of Coari.
